Christmas Tree

Help Me Put a Smile on a Childs Face For the Holidays

Each year my husbands work gets a box full of cards for boys and girls who have requested just one gift for the Holidays.

Last weekend I discovered that last year not all the children had their Wishing Tree cards selected.  With so many people worrying about money, there were just too many children for the number of workers in his office.

This made me really sad as I know what it is like when your parent/s are doing their best to provide the basics and can’t afford gifts at the holidays.  I was fortunate enough to have wonderful grandparents who made sure that we never went without and a very creative mum who wrapped up school supplies and clothing to make it look like we were getting much more.

I’ve decided that I would like to help my husbands office give as many gifts as possible for those children in need.

I am committed to donating a minimum of 10% from all purchases on the following sites towards purchasing these childrens’ gift requests.

http://WhyXyngular.com – for your energy, weight loss and nutritional needs.  Products are available in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK and Europe.

http://Try.MyArbonne.com – Pure, Safe, Beneficial Skincare for the whole family + Gift Box Sets for the holidays.  Products are available in the USA, Canada, Australia and the UK.

I need your help to spread the word so that I can help as many children as possible.

As soon as enough has been raised for the first gift I will post a picture of the gift along with the gift request.  I will continue to do this for each and every gift.

Let’s raise $250 for the first 10 gifts by November 30th!

Leap Frog Tag Reader

TAG Reading System

The Tag Reader is another great product from Leap Frog.  Leap Frog Tag Reader

As children touch the Tag Reader to the pages of specially printed storybooks, words talk, pictures sing and stories live out loud, engaging children’s senses to make reading a rich, fulfilling experience.

There are over 40 books and games based on favorite TV, movie and classic tales to choose from.  For the learn to read books the Tag will help your child sound out the letters in each word.  With the story books your child has the choice of having a page read to them and following along or touching each word as they read the page.

Each book includes comprehension questions that are disguised as games.  Even after your child has mastered reading each book they can continue to benefit from the comprehension games.

The new Tag Reader holds audio for up to 10 books at a time. Just connect the Tag Reader to your computer with the included USB cable, download the audio for your Tag books and drag-and-drop up to 10 of your child’s favorite stories onto your Tag Reader.

Each time you connect the Tag Reader to the computer your child’s play is uploaded to their online profile allowing you to see their progress in reading and comprehension skills.   This includes how long they read each book and the percentage of questions they got right.

We got our first Tag a few years ago and both children have their own along with a set of headphones.  Our oldest is in second grade and is almost ready to say goodbye to his Tag.  His sister is 5 and in Kindergarten and she just loves the new learn to read books.

Some people may be a bit concerned about the price of the Tag Reader and the books.  If you are willing to shop around you can get some great deals.

Here are just a few Tag Reader deals available now:

Starting November 21st – Tag Books are buy 1 get 1 free at Target.  Normally priced at $13.99, some books are reduced to $9.99
Toys R Us has had the Tag pens on sale for $29.99 which is a $10 savings off their $39.99 price.

To keep up on the latest deals be sure to sign up at http://Leap Frog.com for their emails.  They have frequent sales and a fantastic clearance section.  Quite often shipping is free with an order of $50 or more so it makes sense to stock up on sale or clearance items.
We got the Tag Learn to Read Super Book Pack which contains 19 books for just $53.99 along with FREE shipping.

If you have more than 1 child you will need a Tag pen for each child.  I would also recommend the headphones so that multiple children can use their Tags at the same time.

Feel free to share any coupon codes or deals for the Tag pen or books.

Make Your Own Crust Free Sandwiches

Our school has hot lunch available and the daily option of a processed wholewheat crust free sandwich.

My seven year old would really like to have these sandwiches just so he can buy lunch.  As I would prefer his lunch to include less additives I went searching for a way to make crust free, sealed sandwiches at home.

I was pleasantly surprised to find an affordable and practical solution with the Krustbuster.

I can now make my own crust free sandwiches using bread and jelly free of high fructose corn syrup.  The kids love it when I personalize each sandwich with smiles, stars and grape sandwich stamps.

So far I have only used the Krustbuster to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and mini cheese burgers.

If you are concerned about sandwich making taking longer I can report that the Krustbuster has actually reduced the amount of time we spend making lunches.  I now make all sandwiches for the week on Sunday night and then freeze them.

In the future I would like to try making deli sandwiches and the recipe for French Toast on Krustbuster.com looks delicious.

My kids are really picky eaters so I am always looking for new lunch ideas.  Do you have any sandwich recipe suggestions?

crayola crayon maker

How To Recycle Old Crayons

If you are a parent, care giver or teacher with young children you’ve probably wondered what to do with all those broken and small pieces of crayon you have lying around.

I stumbled across this great solution from Crayola today.

It’s the Crayola Crayon Maker! It turns crayon bits and pieces into new crayons in wild color combinations.  Just mix in crayon bits, melt them down, pour into the mold and let harden. Now you’re ready to color again with swirling crayon creations.

Crayola Crayon Maker:
  • Winner of Oppenheim Platinum Award for excellence in the area of child development and children’s media
  • Safety latch lid stays locked while melting for safe fun
  • Coated melting tray allows for easy clean-up after use
  • Requires 60-watt clear, colorless candelabra bulb
  • Crayola Crayon Maker includes one plug-in unit with locking hood
  • Mini crayon maker mold and crayon mold frame
  • 8 unlabeled crayons
  • 2 crayon couplers and instruction sheet for the Crayola Crayon Maker
I have just ordered this online from Walmart.  You can also check for local store availability.
At around $20 this is a great buy.  Just remember to get the 60-watt clear, colorless candelabra bulb if you are giving this as a gift as the bulb is NOT included.  We were able to pick up a 2 pack at our local CVS store.
Update Dec 30th 2010 – we made our first batch of crayons today and the kids had a blast.   The timer did get stuck on our machine to start with but once that was resolved things went smoothly.  Cleaning the trays afterwards is not as simple as explained in the instructions.  Hopefully the clean up doesn’t deter from using it.
I also stumbled across this video that demonstrates how the Crayola Crayon Maker works.
