Over the past few years I have felt like I was struggling in parenting our son. I tried different parenting techniques and took two different parenting classes. We implemented concepts from each of the courses but one thing was clear, this was more than just a parenting or an anxiety issue.
At 6 and a half and after 18 months of attending school it was obvious that I was not going to get any further insight into our sons’ behaviour from the teachers or administration. They were not seeing as many of the same behaviors as we were or the extremes that we were seeing at home. After much searching I found a medical practice that has expertise in psychological evaluating of children and also accepted our insurance.
Both women in the practice were very nice and very thorough in their evaluation. I was also pleased to see our son behave in a manor consistent with his typical behaviour during the sessions. Based on our concerns he underwent the following tests, some of which are questionaires completed by us, his parents, and his teacher and childcare provider.
Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS): Module 2
Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF)
Social Skills Rating System (SSRS)
Test of Language Development
Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales – Parent Rating Form
Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children
Woodcock-Johnson, Third Edition – Tests of Achievement
At the completion of the tests they took a few weeks to complete a very detailed report and determine the diagnosis. We met with the medical team to discuss the results along with recommendations. We are happy we persued our concerns about our sons development and are in the process of taking many of the steps recommended.
As an internet geek and avid researcher I will be adding additional posts about Aspergers along with tools or sites that I find in my search to help our son.
