How I planned a wedding in less than 48 hrs for under $3500

How I planned a wedding in less than 48 hrs for under $3500

If you have lived in Sydney and spent anytime in the city there is a chance you have seen a bride and groom having photos taken in the park under the Harbour Bridge.

I always wanted to get photos taken there. I figured it was probably really expensive to get married in that park.

When I found out we had to get married in the US I figured that I would not be having a Sydney wedding. So when the chance came up, the first place I thought of was that park. It turned out the park was available for 2 hrs the day we wanted and it only cost about $200 for the reservation.

The park is right next door to the Sydney Park Hyatt so we went to check out the menu. We reserved a couple of tables and got a great deal on a 2 course meal with 1 drink for each guest.

At this time I had only been living in the US a few months but I was craving Aussie food so for our cake we headed to Michel’s Patisserie and ordered a Chocolate Mud Cake to have back at the Hilton with family and friends after lunch.
Using the Yellow Pages I was able to find a great place to get my dress cleaned as the train was quite dirty from the first wedding. But I needed jewellery…. Our jeweller in the US had lent us jewellery for the first wedding. He had offered us the opportunity to bring the pieces to Australia and send them back via FedEx but I didn’t want to risk losing them. Being in the heart of Sydney we strolled through the Strand Arcade and found a great little store with the perfect drop earrings and necklace.

The thing that we found the hardest was getting my husband a tux for the day. But like everything else we managed to work that out too.

We really wanted to get some nice photos of our wedding, but I didn’t know of anyone in my family that could take photos without cutting peoples heads off. I got online and checked around and knew there was no way we were going to be able to afford a professional photographer. Well that was until I stopped at my old chiropractors office. We got to chatting with the receptionist and she mentioned a client who was trying to build her portfolio for wedding photography! The total cost of our wedding photos, including an album was just $400.

Trying to get a celebrant on a Saturday with less than 2 weeks notice was not going to be an easy task. We also had to find someone who would understand our situation and not require a marriage certificate. I had a light bulb moment and looked for those who officiated over same sex marriages and had a celebrant in under an hour.

I got my makeup done at the Mac counter in Myers/Grace Bros and then went upstairs to the salon to get my hair done as my hair dresser was working there at the time. I got a few looks from the customers in Myers/Grace Bros as I walked through with my veil but it didn’t bother me.
My dress had coloured beads and I had wanted a bouquet of purple roses to be carried on one arm, as opposed to a traditional bouquet. I was able to get the dozen roses and a couple of boxes of rose petals for an amazing price from the flower store underground at Town Hall station. This bouquet was actually better than the one I had for the first wedding.

So in the end this is how things turned out.

Location – Sydney, park under the Harbour Bridge, Opera House in the background.
Lunch – Sydney Park Hyatt
Cake – Sydney Hilton concierge level

I will post photos soon… I promise.

Tarrazza Planter

Tarrazza Planter

This review is for anyone who loves to have plants living on a patio or deck but can’t seem to get the watering right.

Living in Southern California the wind and sun during the summer can leave my plants underwatered. With 2 small kids I have been known to forget to water my plants on occasion, only to look out onto my patio at some very sad vines or flowers.

Last year I decided to look around for some better options for my larger climbers. I stumbled across these great square and trough planters.

They have the look of a wooden planter but are made of UV stabilized polypropylene and won’t crack, peel or fade. They also have a large soil capacity and deep reserviors with aeration. I love how lightweight they are as I am able to move mine around with ease, after I added the optional casters. The casters are not visible once installed which ads to the visual appeal.

If you like climbing plants there are iron trellises that you can add to the planters that fit securely in the back corners of the planter. The trelisses come in three sections that slide together making it easy for a one person installation.

The Weddings....

The Weddings….

Yes that’s right, I wrote Weddings….

We were always planning to get married in the US, mostly because it was a requirement for my Fiance visa.

My immediate family were all saving up for their once in a lifetime opportunity to come to the US so it just didn’t occur to me to have a second wedding in Australia.

As it turned out nothing went to plan.

In August 2001 I left my job and came to the US to chill out before the wedding. My fiance visa was still being processed so I knew I would have to go back to Australia one more time before the wedding for the interview in Sydney. Well September 11th happened and my family got caught in the aftermath and were left with no tickets and waiting for compensation that was not going to arrive before the wedding. In addition to that the flower girls (my half-sister and 2 nieces) mums were not about to let their babies on a plane to America. So here we were less than a month before the wedding and it looked like only my nana was coming over.

Shortly afterwards our honeymoon got cancelled because the cruise line went bankrupt and then I got the letter from the INS informing me to be in Sydney for my immigration interview 3 days after the wedding….

To say I was a little stressed was an understatement.

We decided to go ahead with the ceremony in the US and not sign the marriage certificate. Then the day after the wedding we would fly back to Australia for the immigration interview and have our honeymoon there. My dad was really upset that he wasn’t going to walk me down the aisle and kept telling me how he wanted to see me in my dress so I suggested he pay for a wedding in Sydney. Anyone who knows him, will understand that I really didn’t think he would; but after 3 days he agreed to give me $3500. I planned that wedding in less than 48 hrs for approx 40 people and stayed under budget but that will have to be another post.

So in October 2001 we ended up exchanging vows 3 times.

Wedding # 1 – Las Vegas, NV at Sunset Gardens with approx 80 family and friends
Wedding # 2 – Sydney, Australia at the Quay with approx 40 friends and family
Wedding # 3 – Las Vegas, NV (the official wedding) with mother-in-law as a witness.

I got to wear my dress to both the 1st and the 2nd ceremonies and opted for a more casual look for the 3rd ceremony.

My dad thought it was funny that we were having 3 ceremonies in 1 month; whilst JD thought it was cheaper than having 3 different ex-wives… like my dad.

What issues came up in your wedding planning?

OXO Good Grips - Smooth Edge Can Opener

OXO Good Grips – Smooth Edge Can Opener

I have a few health conditions that have left me a little weak in the hands.

Using a normal metal can opener was becoming harder and I really didn’t want to keep hurting my hands all the time.

I decided to give the OXO Good Grips can opener a try as I have some of there other products and have had great success. Well they delivered again!

Not only is it easy to use but there are no sharp edges. It cuts differently to a traditional can opener in that it removes the top of the can. There is even a little gripper that you can use to pick the lid up.

With an MSRP of under $20 I think this is a very wise purchase for parents and those who need an easier way to open cans.

Bonnie Babes Foundation

I recently found out about the Bonnie Babes Foundation and decided to share this as organization would have been of great help to me and my family in 1994 had they been fully operational at the time.

They are a non-profit volunteer based charity which is established for the health and well-being of families. Sadly one in every four pregnancies ends in a loss from miscarriage and stillbirth. Over 17,000 babies are born prematurely, many of them often struggling for life.

The Bonnie Babes Foundation helps to save babies lives and counsel families through this extreme hardship.

One of their fundraising efforts this year is Pride of the Nation. It is an exciting and unique way to celebrate our kids.

Pride of the Nation celebrates kids from newborn to 15 years old in portraits by professional photographers that will be published in a stylish coffee table book for all of Australia to see! All that is needed is a $50 donation to the Foundation or $75 for two or more children from the same family.
Pride of the Nation is an unforgettable momento for your family for the rest of their lives and for generations to come.

There are also $10,000 in prizes to be won in the Member gets Member campaign.

So get behind a great Aussie cause if you can.

All proceeds the Foundation raises are for vital medical research projects, and for our 24 hour, 7 day per week family counselling services which support families with seriously ill babies and infants with childhood illnesses.

How did he Propose?

I decided to do a post about how my husband proposed because it was very romantic.

We knew after my first visit to the US that we were going to get married, and thanks to one of our friends I even knew the wedding date…. it slipped out. So I was just waiting for the proposal, but I had no idea when it would be.

My next trip over was in March. After close to 15 hrs on a plane I was tired and all I wanted to do was take a shower but we had to go meet a friend at Disneyland because she could only meet us today. She was from China and it seemed feasible that this would be the only day our schedules would line up. So I got picked up at the airport in my capris a t-shirt and a pair of sneakers. We got to Disneyland and we were going to meet her in front of the castle. Well JD got really nervous and seemed a little worried I got up to watch the swans whilst he was talking to the Disney photographer. Of course I didn’t understand why at the time.

Very shortly afterwards, JD got down on bent knee in front of the castle and pulled a glass slipper out of his shirt sleeve with a diamond ring inside and asked me to marry him. Of course I said yes. As it turned out the friend from China was just a ploy to get me to Disneyland…
And we have photos of the proposal because the Disney photographer took them for us, and even took a few with our camera…
